Suzanne Vega - Tom's Diner

The other day, while we were in the car, Andy played a CD he had made. This was one of the songs that was on it. And Tom's Diner is one of those songs that gets stuck in my head for days. It also reminds me of when I worked at a clothes store in the early nineties. That, in turn, reminds me of how the employees were allowed to bring in tapes to play on the in-store stereo system. I once brought in _Disintegration_ and everyone who worked there gave me a look that said "please turn that off". Oh well . I could understand their reasons for wanting me to turn the tape off. That was the sort of music that would drive shoppers over to a different clothes store.

But, anyway, one of the reasons why I like this song is because Suzanne Vega does a good job of making me visualize what the N is seeing. But I get to fill in the specifics of her descriptions.

There is so much Tom's diner in my life...here the other day I was browsing the New York Times online instead of working and came across this:

I attended Columbia where the place is near; there are better places, but it suits without having to try too hard. I grew up in diners, they have some draw for me still although I hardly can eat in them now.

Vega's entry is a lovely read.
