St. Patrick's Day Festivities

The St. Patrick's Day festivities at Andy's old college were really fun this year. Even though many of the people that attended the event were current students, there were still plenty of people that must have been families of alumni.

After the intermission, as is usual, there were quite a few chairs without anyone sitting in them. Though there was a decent amount of people still in attendance. I think the first half was fun but I had a better time during the second half (I think Andy and the kids did as well).

They played many of my favorites. And they played "The Black Velvet Band" and "The Moonshiner" early on this year. Those are both really fun songs and it's fun to hear everyone sing them (and other songs) with such oomph and gusto.

Here's a link to some youtube videos of songs I heard last St. Patrick's Day.

Two other songs that I didn't know as well, but remember from last year, were "On the One Road" and "The Mermaid" (I'll look for youtube videos for both tomorrow (later today)). Both were fun to sing with everyone. I still have the choruses to both songs stuck in my head!

They had a bodrhan player, a bassist (electric), and person who played the tin whistle. They accompanied the president of the college, who sang and also played guitar as well. There was also a harpist, who seemed to me to be very good, that did one song by herself.

There was also some Irish dancing that was very good.

I heard the bassist play bits from "Seven Nation Army" sometimes between songs. At one point, he started playing parts from "Brown Eyed Girl" near the end of the festivities and so they all sang the whole song! Yay!

I think it was just what we all needed. When we left we all ran happily to the car. Then we listened to Bonnie Rideout's Gi'Me Elbow Room on the way home. She's set music to a few of Stevenson's poems. I like what she does to Stevenson's "From a Railway Carriage" and Yeat's "The Fiddler of Dooney". I'll have to check youtube later to see if I can find it there so I can post it.

So, all in all, a heck of a lot of fun!
