Halloween

Besides Christmas, and Valentines, and Easter, this is one of my favorites. It's probably a favorite for some of the same reasons why I like Ren Faires. There's a comraderie in the air amongst all the people in costume. They share that smile that says they're in with it too. You get to dress up, hide deep in the persona of a made up creation, or a real one -- it's up to you. And it's not just you (the single you). You don't have to feel silly for wearing a costume, --'cause guess what? It's Halloween!
And it's not just that. Around here, all of the leaves haven't fallen from the trees quite yet. They will in November, sure, but for the moment they're clinging by a stem to the trees -- orange, red, and of course, a few persistent greens. You can hold on to the leaves for a few days longer. And it's chilly. Just chilly enough for a light jacket. Nothing more. While you walk up and down the streets with your children, husband, and friends, you can smell smoke from newly lit fireplaces , and the rich smell of leaves as your shoes press the ground, much like a pestle. Sure, you can do this any other night that's not Halloween, but there's something special, almost eel-like-electrical, that makes this the best night for it all.
Happy Halloween! (even if it is a day early)
